Manx

History

Is it the Leprechaun’s myth, or did the cat’s name derive from its native Isle of Man. We may never know, but the Manx was very popular in England in the late 19th century and is rare breed today. The cats are thought to date to 1750 or later.

Description

Medium-sized, muscular cat, with rounded rump, taillessness and a soft, double coat. This breed can actually be drawn with a series of circles. It has a very round head with rounded cheeks which give it a jowly appearance, especially in the male.

Grooming and Physical Needs

  • Grooming Needs: weekly brushing or combing to remove dead hair and distribute skin oil

  • Moulting: Undercoat will build up over time if this brushing is neglected
  • Exercise Needs: loves to run and play
  • Average Life Span: 8 to 14 years

Behaviour

  • Family: highly people-oriented. Choose him only if you can give him plenty of time and attention daily.
  • Temperament: mellow fellow: an even-tempered and affectionate cat
  • Trainability: smart cat who can learn tricks, including fetch and come, and is willing to walk on leash if taught early.
  • Sociability (Other Pets): lives peacefully with cats and dogs who respect his authority and can learn to leave birds and fish alone
  • Meowing: carry on a conversation in a sweet trilling voice
